It must be love, love, love apparently
February 3rd, 2008 by Murray Barnes | Posted in MusicYesterday was very exciting. Not only did I get very, very drunk (that is a joke), but I went to a concert. OK, yes, I go to concerts all the time, with my incredibly active social life. But, this one was special. For, you see, I fell in love. Apparently.
Nobody was more surprised than me that I fell in love. In fact, I still don’t think it happened, but my friends have convinced me that it has, and who am I to argue with them? Apparently, Kirsty McGee is perfect for me. As far as I can tell, their reasoning for this is that she wears a hat. Well, then she opened her mouth, and sang the sort of songs that PMT would sing if, you know, we had talent. I will be honest, the Hobopop Collective impressed me greatly. When a band brings out a girl with the introduction “We met her two days ago, and had to ask her to join the band” and she comes out and plays the saw, then you know you are in for something special.
I was incredibly lucky to be able to see them last night, as it was their first ever concert, and I would thoroughly recommend catching them if you can, especially as they are going to be live only, and not produce any albums together. Kirsty McGee has released a Hobopop E.P., which you can buy for just five of your English pounds from her website. To be honest though, unless you’ve seen them live, I probably wouldn’t recommend it, or the Sapho and Phao E.P. In fact, especially not that one. £5 it cost me, and it has four songs, with the longest one reaching 1:59. At least I have the consolation that the music is fantastic, and it’s one of only 250 to be made.
Having not bought any of her solo albums, I cannot say if you should buy them or not. But, if you like folk music with a slight sense of odditiness, which should be a word, then you could do worse than check them out. Any band with a love song about dust is a fantastic one, you’ll find.
I probably don’t need to add that Capercaillie were amazing. That’s kind of obvious, I would think.
