The line is a dot to me
March 10th, 2008 by Murray Barnes | Posted in musingsI enjoy “banter,” a word I just looked the definition up on the internet. Princeton’s wordnet defines it as “light teasing repartee,” which works for me. That’s precisely what I mean by banter. Wikipedia, on the other hand, goes for a slightly different definition: “Conversation is the verbalization of concepts involving abstractions and concrete objects which make up the reality in which we reside.”
That is not banter. That’s plain conversation, said in big fancy words meant to imply that we are stupid, because we do not quite understand. It’s fun when understanding the definition of a word is more difficult than just performing the word.
Now, the point I was going to get onto, before that sideline there, was that I wonder, sometimes, if I go too far with my light teasing repartee. Take a recent example, when demonstrating a class at uni.
Other demonstrator: Are you wearing a maternity dress?
Me: Are you calling her fat? And a slut?
Her: Acts all offended.
Me: You know, there are no rules against us calling you fat, or a slut. But, were I to call you pretty, I would get in trouble, you fat slut.
Now, I’m pretty sure that conversation went too far, in the last three words. At least, that’s when she started hitting me. Luckily, it then became 3pm, and I could leave, having achieved my duty of sitting in a lab for two hours having banter.
But, it does make me wonder. When do I go too far? It is not something I am good at telling. It is something I need to work on, you fat slut

He has me to tell when he’s gone too far. Fat slut is a bit much. I think maybe slut would be enough. I’d have loved to have seen you get hit though. Would’ve been fun…
