I love you, Dave.
April 9th, 2008 by Murray Barnes | Posted in Books, Flickr, musingsAh, Dave Gorman. You’re a very special man.
I first heard of Dave way back in the day, when he did that TV show where he told everyone how he and his flatmate were idiots. I’d like to say I watched every episode avidly, but I did not. However, a few years later, my mother bought me the book of the same show, and I read that avidly. If you haven’t read Are You Dave Gorman? then you’ve missed out. He followed this up with his Googlewhack Adventure, which I picked up for £3 in Fopp. I read it on the train home, and giggled almost non-stop. The man’s a genius.
Then the ultimate happened, he brought the show to Perth. Oh, my, I laughed so very, very hard. My favourite moment came at the point where he shouts “PARRRTAY!,” and a drunk member of the audience attempted to heckle him.
Drunk: “That’s the best thing you’ve said all night”
Dave: “Well, you’re obviously not enjoying the show, so why don’t you just fuck off?”
And he refused to continue until the guy left. It was awesome. Then he said we should meet up every year and kill a tramp, each of us taking a tiny bit of the tramp away with us so the police can’t find any evidence. You know, he’s never turned up once…
Anyway, I started following his blog at that point. He was taking the show around the states, and he discovered rock balancing. And flickr.
It was Dave Gorman who inspired me to sign up for flickr, in this guardian article. In fact, more than that, it was Dave Gorman who inspired one of my most popular photos on flickr.
Anyway, why am I saying all this? It’s because he’s got a new book out, America Unchained, and you should buy it. You can get it signed from Play.com, which is nice. In this book, he drives coast to coast across America, ish, trying to avoid all chains, like Burger King, Best Western, Shell and so on. Unfortunately for me, he’s been all inspiring again.
Not enough that I’ve emulated his love of photography and Flickr and rock balancing and beard growing, now I want to drive across America.
Damn you Dave. I still love you though.
