Generating Poetry
April 14th, 2008 by Muz | Posted in pmt, poetryWay back in the mists of time, when we decided to start PMT, Paul asked Tom and I to write some songs for us to perform, Paul having written approximately six songs a night every night since he started puberty. Tom wrote some songs using the traditional method of writing a line, then thinking of something that rhymes with it, and so on until the song is done.
I figured that songs are just poetry with music. So, I figured I’d write some poetry. So, one late night when unable to sleep, I wrote a poem, which has impressed girls. Well, a girl. But, still, I wroted a poem, which I might feature later. Today I want to talk about my less standard poetry writing.
See, I am not that great at writing poetry, because I think it’s a bit silly, and kinda rubbish. I am very much a prose reader. But, how hard could it be to generate poetry? So, I invented a method.
Poems by Google.
It’s very simple to find a poem by Google. It’s hard to find a good one, though. To find a poem by Google, one simply searches for a phrase, and converts the first page of results into a poem. The first I ever found was “Ready To Go All Night“, which was short and sweet.
I tried it again, and found “Why did you go so fast?”, which I have recorded (really badly) for your pleasure.
Sorry for it sounding so tinny and stuff. If I record more poetry for y’all, I’ll do my best to make it sound less, you know, crap. For the words, click to read the rest.
Why Did You Go So Fast?
In retrospect
In Mountbatten and the Partition of India,
By Larry Collins & Dominique Lapierre,
Mountbatten was asked –
“Why did you go so fast in transferring power?
Why did you go so fast that I couldn’t even say goodbye?
Those dreams see me
But I don’t even hear them.
Cause I’ve learnt to be nothing.
Why Did You Go So Fast?
Why Did You Go?
Why so soon?
I do not understand;
You said “forever”
And I thought forever never ended.
The indestructible P800!
Why did you go so fast?
Was it like 200km/h???
I’m glad no one died
But don’t drive so fast.
In my country almost every day
There’s another victim of
Truman Library
One of my first questions
To the vice-presidential candidate was,
“Why did you go so fast at this speech in Philadelphia?”
Why did you go so fast?
She said Oh, did I?
I said YES and asked to be taken
Back to my room,
Was in the hospital at the time
Told the DR
My Regret
Why did you go so fast?
Gillian: I thought, I thought
I could be fast like superman!
Mrs. Chung: OH Gillie.
She bent down to look at My cut
Why did you Go so Fast?
Excellent! She grinned up at him.
“Next time, follow orders Karen,
Honest to Pete,
I didn’t push her At all.
But then again if I was in the hospital
With a broken leg I wouldn’t like to hear
“You idiot, why did you go so fast into that turn?”

I don’t doubt it, Katie. (Well, perhaps I do). My “no” was purely aimed at Murray.

Hmmm. Well I was impressed by the one poem. But, that is just one.

The more abstract and the less personal the poetry/prose/song/painting/whatever it is, the easier it is for the author/composer/creator to not hate it. So with this generative method you can say you like it without appearing vain because you didn’t actually write the phrases themselves.
